The Division of Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS) has now had two Virtual Office Hours, one on April 18th, and the other on May 16th, 2019. Our next Virtual Office Hour will be on June 20th, 2019, at 1 pm EST. The upcoming Office Hour will have a focused discussion about the CAREER funding opportunity. Program directors from each of the research clusters in IOS are available to answer questions from the community and pass on information to investigators interested in IOS, the Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO), or the National Science Foundation.
During each office hour, program directors point out recently published solicitations or Dear Colleague Letters that contain information on funding opportunities that IOS and BIO researchers might find useful. This includes information about upcoming deadlines. Additionally, program directors will briefly discuss topics of interest to the community (e.g., IOS structure and the new no-deadlines proposal submission mechanism). Last, each virtual office hour contains a session dedicated to program director answering questions from attendees.
During the previous office hours, the impact of the new no-deadline proposal submission mechanism has been the subject of many questions from our investigator community, here we summarize answers to those questions:
How will the review process change? The review process for proposals submitted under the no-deadline mechanism remains unchanged; both ad hoc and panel reviews will be requested by program directors and it will . All proposals will continue to receive the same thorough and fair review.
Will there be more/less or larger/smaller panels? The number of proposals included in a panel can vary during the year. Program directors have flexibility in how many proposals are included in a panel and how many panels are convened during a single fiscal year. The size and timing of panels is largely up to the program directors.
What happens if a great proposal is submitted at the end of the fiscal year, do you have money? Proposals that are submitted towards the end of a current fiscal year (for example submitted in September 2019, just days before our current fiscal year ends on September 30, 2019) . We continue to have this flexibility, and this is regularly done with the CAREER proposals, which are submitted in July, and undergo full review to be funded in the next fiscal year (after October 1st).
We encourage all investigators who are eligible to submit a CAREER proposal to contact their cognizant program director with questions and/or plan to attend our next office hour and have questions ready for the participating program directors.
Log on information for our next Virtual Office Hour will be published here on the IOS Blog, please be sure to check back here regularly for updated log on information.
