A Dear Colleague Letter – (DCL) NSF 18-039 – announcing a new funding opportunity to develop breakthrough enabling technologies for functional genomics and crop breeding has been released. This Early Concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER) opportunity invites proposals to overcome barriers to crop breeding and to advance functional genomics in highly innovative and transformative ways.
Significant bottlenecks remain in efforts to improve crop varieties, even if new traits or natural variants are identified — for example, producing hybrids, and understanding recombination and epigenetic inheritance. To help overcome these barriers, this joint activity solicits potentially transformative, “high-risk, high payoff” EAGER proposals to support development of breakthrough ideas for technologies that speed the development of new crop varieties. Proposals should emphasize the development of technologies that will impact crops or model crop systems, and should articulate how the enabling technologies would be used to improve crop breeding.
This opportunity is a multiagency, international collaboration that includes NSF, the U.S. Department of Agriculture-National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) and the U.K. Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
EAGER proposals are submitted in a two-step process, which includes first, submission of a summary front page plus two-pages of text describing the EAGER proposal concept. The summary will be due on March 14, 2018. After review of the summaries, full EAGER proposals will be invited for submission. Please review the DCL for more detailed information about the opportunity and submission instructions. The summary front page for inclusion in the preliminary submission is available.
